It’s exam time and if you’re like me, y’all enjoy studying to some dope instrumentals. This collection by DJ Burn One and his 5 Points production crew (Ricky Fontaine, Walt Live & The Professor) was released back in July, and is still my favourite beat tape of the year. Burn One has produced for Freddie Gibbs, Pill, Yelawolf and Gucci Mane, so you know there is a certain southern style to these joints. Below is a fitting track, “School Daze”:

In 2010 Anthony “Durty Keyz” James from production duo Burd & Keyz passed away suddenly from a bacterial infection called Streptococcus. He was 23 years old. Before he passed, he had started a project called Keyz of Life. In his honour his production partner Andrew “Burd” Liburd decided to finish the project. Featuring artists like Kardinal Offishall, Luu Breeze, Nickelus F, SonReal, Blake Carrington, Shi Wisdom, A-Game, Omar Lunan, Promise, Redway, Rich Kidd, Rochester, Divine Brown and more, Keyz of Life not only pays homage to Keyz but also to his flourishing home city of Toronto. Set for a December release, Keyz of Life has already garnered critical acclaim for its singles “R.N.T.” by Rich Kidd feat. DJ Grouch and “LoveSpeak” by Shi Wisdom feat. KJ.
I know how special this album is to Burd and to the many people who loved, respected, the talent of Keyz. Let’s remember him by listening to this album because music is forever!!
You can listen to the album in full on the bandcamp player below.

The first time I heard Danny Brown was on “Dilla Bot vs. The Hybrid” off Dilla’s Jay Stay Paid album. Being original in hip-hop used to be not only celebrated but necessary for a new emcee to breakthrough. Brown’s flow is self-described as being influenced by the fiends he was exposed to growing up in the D. Released yesterday, this is Danny’s first project since his recent signing to Fool’s Gold Records. Better yet, it’s FREE! Listen to the whole project, it gets better with every listen.

I have no idea why it took me this long to post this album!! I downloaded Back For More a couple of weeks ago and I thought either I or someone from our team would have posted it already, I know I have played it a few times on The Come Up Show. Without further ado, DJ Jazzy Jeff came across Toronto songstress Ayah a few years ago and he was in such awe with her talent that he brought her to Philly to work together. The result is Back for More. I was kind of suprised they decided to give away this project for FREE and Ayah was even giving away free physical copies at the Elzhi show.
With Back for More, fans should expect nothing less than greatness from soul music’s hottest new collaborators. Notable tracks on the project include the soulful tune, Make It Last and title track, Back for More, with its feel good party vibe. Listeners will also witness Ayah’s versatility in the already popular single, Notorious. Ayah unveils her inner b-girl and lyrical flair in this hip-hop banger. Back for More also features appearances from Sugar Tongue Slim (STS) and Toronto’s own Tona.
