[Mixtape] Lil B “The Based God” – Red Flame: Devil Music Edition

I’ve spent a whack of time defending Lil B lately. I’ve also spent a lot of time perfecting the art of cookin’ and spreading the joy of cookin’ by teaching cookin’ infidels how to get it right and become chefs. “Remember,” I usually remind end each cookin’ seminar, “cookin’ is serious business. You don’t smile when you cook.” Then, straight faced, I proceed to chop. And season. And stir. And taste. And cook. #Based.

Moving on, Lil B has dropped his twenty millionth mixtape today, Red Flame: Devil Music Edition, his latest effort since Angels Exodus which houses the extremely bad “All My Life” and pretty awesome “Motivation.” With Lil B, you kinda have to sift out the bad form the good, all while contemplating what exactly “good” and “bad” is. It’s not as easy a question as you thought it may have been. I’m just pressing play right now so I can’t warn you anything beyond what Lil B printed on the cover of the album: “REAL KILLAS WILL DIE TO THIS MUSIC. THIS IS THE LAST ANGRY MUSIC FROM LIL B.”

Righto. Well, whatever it is, I’m sure this is yet another installment of the ever perplexing #based mental exercise.

[Mixtape] Wiz Khalifa – Cabin Fever

Wiz Khalifa’s album Rolling Papers is slated to release March 29th. I really feel like it’s his debut album, even though it isn’t but honestly did you listen to Wiz more than 2 years ago? Now we can’t get enough of him, Black and Yellow was the #1 song on the Hot 100. To keep us satisfied until the new album Wiz just released Cabin Fever without any notice. SURPRISE!!

[Audio] Gilbere Forte – “Time Life” ft. Reese (prod. Boi-1da)

Philadelphia based emcee Gilbere Forte released a nice mixtape called Eyes of Veritas hosted by Don Cannon this past week with a whack full of features and production credits, the most notable being from TO’s very own home-city hero Boi-1da for “Time Life.” The entire mixtape merits download and listen, but I highlight this track as particularly noteworthy for obvious reasons beyond our quardanant exposed bias: It’s fucking dope.

[Mixtape] TOR & Sufjan Stevens – Illinoize

Back in March of 2010, Vancouver’s Tor wrote a reflective post to commemorate the one year birthday of Illinoize, his re-mix album of indie savant Sufjan Stevens’ Illinoise (Asthmatic Kitty; 2005). The original Illinoise is Sufjan’s second concept album that references persons, places, and events, relating to the U.S. state of Illinois and was originally part of a series of fifty albums based around U.S. states, though Stevens has since declared the series was a gag (or maybe he just got tired of the concept). In either event, the record is stunning, and remains one of my favorites of Sufjan’s now ten album discography, The Age of Adz (2010) being his most recent effort to date.

Since Tor released Illinoize, (which layers carefully selected samples of Stevens’ dense orchestrations into beats and rhymes from Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Outkast, and others), Asthmatic Kitty contacted Tor and offered to extend a licence for him to use Sufjan’s samples. Tor rightly notes this is “a really refreshing and awesome move from them, in a time where unfortunatley a lot of record companies are still trying to resist the changes in how fans listen to, distribute, and manipulate music.”

That said, it’s easy to hear why Asthmatic decided to grant him license. Sufjan’s distinctive violin, trumpet, and flute riffs and choruses are immaculately showcased and tastefully set in a golden-hip-hop language that doesn’t sound so far a cousin to indie-rock through Tor’s purview. It sounds like Tor and Sufjan were meant to be.
